2022 FILM PRODUCTION WORKSHOP
About IFAOT
The original intention of establishing the Indigenous Film Academy stems from my profound desire for self-interpretation and self-identification with my ethnic culture.
For a long time, there has been a tendency for outsiders to define "what it means to be Indigenous" through prejudice and ignorance, even the cultural expressions of our tribes have been interpreted by others. This sense of deprivation has driven me to seek strength through imagery.
After filming my first documentary in 2009, I realized the power of visual storytelling and began to contemplate how film could change stereotypes and overturn biases.
The establishment of the film academy aims to empower our people through education, supporting them to voice their stories through imagery, allowing our cultural life to be authentically and sustainably continued in front of the camera.

Our Mission
-
Education
Educate the next generation of indigenous of Taiwan storytellers to tell impactful stories through film.
-
Empowerment
Through this platform to accompany and nurture more filmmakers, and provide them with a space to discuss and give the participants different directions to think about their films under the guidance of the instructors.
-
Connect
There are 16 indigenous groups in Taiwan, which means we have a lot of rich stories from the original, but we also hope to expand our visions, connect and exchange with filmmakers from the island of Oceania, and further collaborate.
-
Share
By sharing each other's films in the classroom, we opened up a deeper discussion, asking questions and suggesting solutions to each other's issues within their films.
-
Preservation and Culture Traslation
Each documentary film is like building a tribal cultural memory database, entering the life world of the subject from the perspective of local residents, and deepening the history, culture and emotions of the indigenous communities.
